What is an Oral Surgeon?

The only dental specialists with surgical training in a hospital-based residency program for a minimum of four years are oral and maxillofacial surgeons, according to the American Dental Association. Oral surgeons can have a single degree, a dental license only, or a dual degree, carrying both a medical and dental license. They train alongside medical residents in internal medicine, general surgery, and anesthesiology and spend time in otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat), plastic surgery, emergency medicine, trauma surgery, and other specialty areas.

This training focuses almost completely on the bones, skin, and muscles of the face, mouth, and jaw. Oral and facial surgeons have knowledge and expertise that uniquely qualifies them to diagnose and treat a number of functional and esthetic conditions in this anatomical area. Oral and facial surgeons and their staff maintain a “culture of safety” in their practice to ensure patients have a safe, comfortable, and successful experience.
